Bart De Nolf was born in Bruges. Aged 16, he started taking double bass lessons with Hein Van de Geyn and John Clayton. Soon after, in 1987, he obtained a double bass First Prize at the Gent Conservatoire.

He joins the orchestra of the BRT public broadcasting company and realizes various projects with them, together with Kenny Wheeler, Mal Waldron, Horace Parlan and Jerome Richardson. He moves to education in 1988 and starts teaching the double bass at the conservatoires of Gent and Brussel. In 1997 no less than Toots Thielemans invites him to join his quartet.
