Saxophonist Joop Ayal was born in 1925 on the Indonesian island of Kisar. In 1948 he went to The Netherlands, where he played with singer Rita Reys. A few years later he settled in Brussels, where he learned how to master the baritone sax and often performed alongside Francis Bay at the infamous Brussels Au Gaity club.
In the ‘60s he explores the club circuit and does occasional session work for Belgian television. In 1976 his own quintet plays the big stage at Jazz Middelheim. In the early 2000s he can be found playing in Koen De Cauter’s group and with the Retro Jazz Orchestra.
