Lode Mertens, born and bred in Geraardsbergen, was still very young when he took his first music lessons at the local Municipal Music Academy. Having caught the music bug, he enrolled at the Leuven Lemmens Institute aged 14, where he did solfeggio, music theory, harmony and instrument, and graduated with a First Prize in solfeggio. He obtained a Master’s Degree at the Gent Conservatoire in June 1998.

Lode has been a permanent member of the Brussels Jazz Orchestra since 1995 and is an active musician and co-founder of ‘The Bones’ and ‘High Voltage Sextet’. The sextet released its debut album ‘Hoppin Around’ on our W.E.R.F. label in 1995. He is a member of mambo orchestra ‘El Tattoo Del Tigre’ and active as a freelance musician with various artists/orchestras. In 1997 he extensively toured Japan with the Caravelli orchestra for five weeks, to name but one of his many exploits.

He has been teaching at the Geraardsbergen Municipal Music Academy since 1997 and at the Leuven Lemmens Institute since 2004.
