Biography

Antwerp bass player Piet Verbist started off playing the classical double bass, but soon moved to jazz. After various jazz internships, he enrolled at the Antwerp Jazz Studio, where he was taught by the likes of Dave Pike, Dennis Luxion and Hein Van De Geyn.

In 1994 he obtained a first prize as ‘Performing Jazz Musician’ at the Brussels Conservatoire. His career has been on the rise ever since and he has played with various famous musicians, both nationally and internationally: Eric Legnini, Nathalie Loriers, Paolo Fresu, Bert Joris, Jef Neve, Flavio Boltro, Mark Turner, Toots Thielemans etc.. He was a permanent member of the Jef Neve Trio for a while and recorded two albums on Universal Music with them (‘Nobody is Illegal’ and ‘Soul in a Picture’).

Today he is often heard playing with the Belgo-American Chad McCullough-Bram Weijters Quartet and his own group Zygomatik.
