Biography

Drummer Stéphane Galland was given his first drum set at the age of 3. Six years later, aged nine, he started taking music lessons at the Huy conservatoire. Galland began playing with other jazz musicians like Eric Legnini and Jean-Pierre Cataoui when he was eleven. He was to make another two albums with the Eric Legnini trio.

He met guitarist Pierre Van Dormael in 1988 and, together with a number of other musicians, they founded Brussels jazz club De Kaai. Round about the same time they also formed the Nasa Na Band, with Fabrizio Cassol on saxophone and Michel Hatzigeorgiou on bass. After Pierre Van Dormael left the band, and following a trip to the Central African jungle, they rebaptized themselves Aka Moon. Galland is famous for his creativity and his natural mastery of highly complex rhythms. He plays jazz, as well as African music, classical music and pop. In 2003 he toured with Joe Zawinul's Syndicate, of which he is currently a permanent member.

He can be found on our W.E.R.F. label playing with ensembles such as K.D.'s Basement Party, Octurn, Variations On A Love Supreme and Greetings From Mercury.
