Biography

Tutu Puoane was born in 1979 in South Africa, in a township near Pretoria. She grew up in a musical family in a time when jazz was still regarded as a form of rebellion against Apartheid. John Coltrane, Ella Fitzgerald and Count Basie are the musicians of her youth.

Tutu studied at the University of Cape Town. Via The Hague she ended up in Antwerp. She has performed in South Africa, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, the US, Belgium and the Netherlands. She cooperated with the Brussels Jazz Orchestra in, among others, the project Writing Billie, a tribute to Billie Holiday. Another successful production with Tutu in the lead was Goddamn! A tribute to Nina Simone. In spite of her young age, Puoane has already shared the stage with many famous names in the world of jazz, including Roy Hargrove, Stacy Rowles, Hein van de Geyn, Dré Pallemaerts and Toots Thielemans.

She first proved herself with her much liked debut album 'Song'. This was followed two years later by the equally impressive follow-up 'Quiet Now'. On our label she appeared as a guest of Saxkartel. She is also the lead singer in the successful MixTuur project of accordionist Tuur Florizoone.
