Description

Mâäk is the new name of Mâäk’s Spirit, one of the oldest and most active jazz ensembles in Belgium. While it originated in the mid-1990s around the figure of trumpet player Laurent Blondiau as quite a classic jazz quartet, the ensemble developed into an internationally structured collective of adventurous musicians.

Since 2010 Mâäk has been one of the rare structurally subsidised jazz ensembles in Flanders and owes this status to the constant reinvention of a variety of genres into a completely new and unique sound: from jazz to contemporary classical and from avant-garde to African roots music and the Arabic music tradition. For this newest CD “Buenaventura” they sought their musical refuge in Europe.

The CD is the result of cooperation with two major names in the Hungarian jazz scene: guitarist Gábor Gadó and drummer Tamás Geröly, musicians with whom they realised a project for the Budapest jazz festival in 2010. Apart from three Belgian wind instrument players (Laurent Blondiau on trumpet, Jeroen Van Herzeele on tenor saxophone and Michel Massot on tuba and trombone); two French musicians complete the current Mâäk: Guillaume Orti on alto saxophone and Claude Tchamitchian on contrabass.
