Erik Vermeulen is doubtless one of the most discerning but also the most headstrong pianists in our country and is a master at redrawing the boundaries of his instruments and his favourite music: jazz.
The one constant throughout his career has been its heterogeneity. This album once again offers us a mix of own compositions and improvisations of myriad moods, underpinned by a striking organic timbre. The idea behind this album was to grasp the intimacy and warmth of a live concert, hence the title “Live Chroma”.
This project once again boasts the support of his faithful and dyed-in-the-wool rhythm section, consisting of bass player Manolo Cabras and drummer Marek Patrman. The same trio can be heard in “The Unplayables” with saxophonists Ben Sluijs and Jeroen Van Herzeele, whose 2008 album “Harmonic Integration” was released on our label (W.E.R.F. 071).
