Peace The New Jazz
Nathan Daems and Lander Gyselinck, the Belgian musicians from Ragini Trio, are probably two of the most important figureheads of this current generation in their country. Very early on in their career both gentlemen started experimenting with influences from ethnic music, alternative pop/rock and electronics. They have successfully founded bands like Black Flower, STUFF., BeraadGeslagen …
In 2013 Nathan and Lander teamed up with befriended Italian bass player Marco Bardoscia (Paolo Fresu, Rita Marcotulli) to form Ragini Trio. Their goal was clear: explore the rich Indian music tradition and modernise it in a jazz context. Their debut ‘Ragini’ (W.E.R.F.114) hit a bull’s-eye and paid off in the form of a spot at The Belgian Jazz Meeting showcase festival, followed by a richly busy national and international tour.
that same tour the trio met two special guests: the French-Serbian piano virtuoso Bojan Z and classically trained Indian singer Sawani Mudgal. Commissioned by arts centre KAAP they rehearsed together for a week in November 2017, which culminated in a new repertoire and the recording of an album. The result of this intense creative process was previewed at the festivals STORM! (Ostend, BE) and BRAND! (Mechlin, BE). Both concerts were praised by press and public and considered as highlights
