Nathan Daems Quintet
The music originated from the five creative brains that make up the group. All are musical seekers who are not cramped by narrow-mindedness. To them, the term jazz stands for an open vision of music that derives and remoulds elements from a variety of music genres to then give it a completely new creative expression. This can clearly be heard on this wonderful debut album. Leader Nathan Daems is a multi-instrumentalist and plays sax, flute and Turkish clarinet. He has a love of gypsy music from the Balkan and Turkey, jittery Ska and Indian classical music as well as full-blooded jazz. It therefore comes as no great surprise that Daems can also be found in a variety of bands such as Black Flower, Bazaar d’Orient & Ragani Trio and in the Antwerp Gipsy Ska Orkestra, Maguaré, Vetex or the Paolo Marquez Group. On the piano and keyboards his right-hand man is Fulco Ottervanger who is also active with drummer Simon Segers in young Ghent formation ‘De Beren Gieren’. Guitarist Bart Vervaeck can already be found on our label as a member of the Django!! project. He is also very much influenced by the guitar playing of Marc Ribot. The band is completed by young Ghent contrabassist Sebastiaan Gommeren.
